Does anyone know where I can buy a decent pair of running shoes?

I'm hoping to get into running and maybe run a marathon next year, but I want to make sure I have the right footwear so I don't damage my feet/ankles. Can anyone reccommend a decent - but not massively expensive - retailer for decent trainers/running shoes? Or any brand names?

Does anyone know where I can buy a decent pair of running shoes?
I'd recommend going to a store that specializes in running shoes, so you'll get some good advice based on your feet and how you plan to use the shoes. I got my latest pair at a New Balance store. The salesperson had me walk barefoot, and I told him about predicted mileage, what type of surface I'd usually run on, that sort of thing. To see if there's a New Balance store near you, click here: http://www.newbalance.com/findastore/

I've also heard that Fleet Feet stores are good! http://www.fleetfeet.com/

NO- Wal-Mart, Sears, K-Mart, et.al.

Best is to get them custom fit at a local running shop. If you don't walk barefoot for them and run on a treadmill, keep looking as they are poseurs and thieves.

I would get some good walking shoes first and begin your training with power walking. It will strengthen some key foot and leg areas that will break down if you dive in to running and then your won't make your shedule. Give the power walking 4-6 weeks before tentative running.

You have to build to 2 x 10 miles a day and get a 20 miler in at least once well before the event. May I suggest a 1/2 Mara close to 6 weeks before the Big One.

This applies to anyone of any age attempting their first marathon. If you are already a college 10K runner just start building to the 2 x 10 milers 6 days a week, of course you would know where to get shoes, then?????

My coach mentioned a website for runners where you enter how much you ran that week and it keeps track of when you have to get new running shoes. (about every 250 miles)

You can go to runnersworld.com and sign up to use the free training log they have. It lets you record everything you do from running to cross trainig to routes you run and the shoes you use.

How many miles should I get out of my running shoes?

I'm a very large framed runner and I remember being told that you should get about 100 miles out of a good pair of running shoes for an average build. I am about 235 lbs. and I find my knees and back start to bother me after about 50 miles of usage. I wear Brooks Beast, which are supposed to be the best shoes for someone my size with flat feet. After I replace them, the knee pain and back pain subside again. Does this sound about right to you other runners out there? Just want to know because it is expensive to replace them every few months.

How many miles should I get out of my running shoes?
average is about 300-500 miles. the heavier you are the faster the cushion breaks down. I would recommend getting a different type of shoes 50 miles is way to short of a life span for running shoes. there are lots of running stores that have experts than can put you an a treadmill and analyse your running and give you ideas also I use wwwroandrunners.com there is a 800 number that you can call and talk to someone and they have a 30 day money back guarantee. If you evaluated the type of shoe you need by an on line gage, I have found those to be unreliable. maybe it's not the shoes that is causing the knee pain. trying treating your injury with ice an anti inflammatory and if that does not work ease off on the running until it has healed.

However, be careful because not all schools allow spikes to be used on their tracks. Most name-brand companies carry track shoes. Here is a VERY brief sampling:

Can I tell if i am an overpronater by looking at my old running shoes?

I have recently taken up running and have been looking at web sites trying to find out what sort of running shoes i need. They say you can tell by looking at old running shoes but i find it totally confusing. Can any one out there simplify this for me so I can confidently go out and buy suitable shoes. I dont have much time to go to a specialist and would like to buy over the internet. Help please?

Can I tell if i am an overpronater by looking at my old running shoes?
if ur old shoes are worn out unevely, specially on the outer heel side, u overpronate
Reply:Go to a specialty running shop and bring your old shoes. Have them look at your shoes, step w/o shoes, and stride. They will be able to make an evaluation. Another way to look is go to the beach and look at your foot prints in the wet sand. Runner's World and Road Runner Sports websites have foot guides too.
Reply:There will be more wear on the inside of ur shoes- but it is difficult to be sure so u shd visit a Running (not just general sports) shop %26amp; ask for their opinion. bring in a few pairs of ur running shoes for them to look at. (I hope u dont just have 1 pair!) if ur an over-pronator, u can buy special Overpronation shoes which shd help make ur feet more neutral (normal).
Reply:Look at your shoes from the back as if you are wearing them. if the soles are worn unevenly then you have a gait abnormality. If the tops of the shoes point toward each other you are an overpronator.
Reply:Overpronators run with their toes slighty pointing inwards, "pigeon toed" as some would say. You roll your feet slightly inwards as you push, pushing off of your toes. When this happens, you tend to wear out the front outside edge. Also, the inside part of the shoe around your ankle might be crushed somewhat. Go to a running store and talk to the salespeople and bring your old shoes and ask these questions and they should be able to confirm this. If they diagnose you as an overpronator, you will probably be advised to select stability shoes. Asics Adrenaline etc.

By the way, that guy that says you have flat foot is totally wrong, ignore him.
Reply:Specialised running shops like the Sweat shop can analize your running style for you, explain it all clearly and help you get the shoes adapted to you. You can also get a good guide on Runnersworld website.

I wear custom orthotics, does it matter what kind of running shoes I buy?

My doctor told me that since I have custom orthotics that I no longer have to worry about buying motion control/stability type running shoes. Is this true? I hope so because these tend to be the ugliest running shoes out there.

I wear custom orthotics, does it matter what kind of running shoes I buy?
Are they hard orthotics? I have hard orthotics and I was unable to run in them; my foot was impacting a hard surface (the orthotic), so I was not getting the cushioning the shoe offered.

If you have soft orthotics, then you in much better shape! The orthotics should provide the extra support you need.

However, the orthotics were likely made from static measurements, meaning you stood there and had a form made, or you walked on a pressure sensitive mat to determine your foot motion. This kind of measurement does not account completely for the high-speed, high-impact environment your feet encounter when running.

So you may not need the heavy-duty motion control shoes, but you may need some motion control, especially if you run fast or are heavy. Try the shoes, run in them in the store, see what feels right. If you go to a running shoe store, you should find some people who run and have experience fitting people with unique feet.
Reply:new balance or sacony, according to my podiatrist, are the best for your feet. Nike and rebok, not.
Reply:yes, you can where whatever shoe you want as long as you keep you orthodics in.

however, somedays your orthodics may bother you, so i would recomend keeping a pair of motion control/stability sneakers handy just in case =]
Reply:What do the orthotics correct? Your shoes should be neutral, because if you are a pronator and the shoes are constructed to correct that problem or to correct supenation then the orthotics are not doing their job.

This is probably what the doctor was talking about. Go with a neutral shoe.
Reply:Since when does your teethes have anything to do with what type shoes you wear?

What to look for in my first serious pair of running shoes?

Hello. I live in Somerset in England and run in my spare time purely because I enjoy it.

I'd like to run more seriously, however, and maybe competitively over 5000m. I've never bought a proper pair of running shoes, though.

What should I look for in a good pair, and how much should I be looking to pay? I can spare about £50, maybe £60 at a push.

Thanks!

What to look for in my first serious pair of running shoes?
First things first:

Typically, most shoes will work if you are just running here or there. However, once the miles start ADDING up, and believe me they add up pretty fast, your body will start to complain if your shoes are not right.

Most people feel free to use whatever they want at first. But once your back, knees, feet, legs, shins and or other parts of your body start complaining, I'd seriously look into getting fitted for a great pair of shoes. It's honestly better to go before this starts, however, anytime is better than never.

Check it out, different styles of running demand different styles of shoes...I recommend going to a specialized running store, even if you are a beginner. It's never to early to take care of yourself.

The best thing you can do is go down a Running Lab. In fact there's a place by that name "The Running Lab", they are FANTASTIC! And they have all different brands of running shoes.

They will have you take off your shoes, watch you walk, and even take an imprint of your foot. After doing so, they will spend a few minutes analyzing everything. They will ask you a few questions about your running style and your level of running.

Once they have finished they will direct you to a wall of shoes, that has ALL different brands of shoes on it and say something like; "These are what we recommend for you based on your foot's shape, the way you run, where your foot actually impacts the ground and the width of slimness of your feet.

After they show you the selection, try a few pairs on, take them for a "test run" around the block and once you've found a pair that you like, then get them.

The benefit of getting a fitting is that you get a shoe that conforms well with your foot.

When my spouse got back from the Running Lab her expression was, I feel as if I have a spring in my step!

It increased her confidence and she didn't have any shin splints.

The "Running Lab" doesn't charge you extra for their evaluations and the shoes are competitively priced.

Hope this helps...

Your feet?
Reply:The best thing would be to go to a specialist running shop and have them asses your running style (how your foot comes down etc.) They do it for a living so they know what they're talking about. If you get the wrong shoe you're going to do yourself some serious damage.
Reply:Things you can do at home, before deciding which running shop to drop a disproportionate amount of money in (wink) include:

Observe the arches of your feet and decide whether they are high, normal, or flat. If you're not sure, compare your feet to those of your mates.

The 'lasts' that good running shoes are built on are specific to arch types among other things.

Check the soles of an old pair of shoes, even those that you've only walked in.

The wear patterns will indicate what type of runner you may be, and what type of support you'll need.

Wear on the outside edge of the sole and forefoot may indicate overpronation: a common but easily corrected problem.

Bring that pair of shoes with you if necessary. A good salesperson at a reputable shop will know how to read that wear pattern and suggest the proper support.

Once you're in the ballpark as far as support and tracking, try on several pairs of that style. Even ones that are out of your price range. This will give you an idea of what is offered for more money. You may discover that you don't ever need many of the extra bells and whistles.

Sizes do not translate throughout the brands. Although the UK sizing system is more universal (e.g. 43 vs sz.11) widths and toebox sizes are specific to the shoe itself, not just the maker. This can only be determined through wearing. So don't base a decision on the first pair of a specific brand.

If you happen to have slim feet through the midfoot (arches) and a wider toebox (forefoot) don't be embarrassed to ask to try on women's versions of the same shoes.

They are usually offer a better fit through the midfoot without having to crank the laces each time you put them on.

I myself wear women's shoes and I've yet to experience any issues. Very rarely can you tell the difference in appearance.

Spend some time running in each pair, even if it's just down the store aisle and back. You'll feel any tight spots, and get a feel for the cushioning each shoe offers. Remember too, that they will feel a little different after 50 miles or so.

If you find a craicing pair, save enough money to buy a second pair exactly the same. Shoe models often get discontinued, as what happened to my favorite, even the best pairs, and are often replaced with a similar model that isn't quite right anymore.

As far as how much you should spend; A higher price doesn't necessarily provide a better shoe. It's all very subjective.

If you find a pair that feels right when you run, fits perfect, and doesn't cause any leg problems (I say "leg", because an ill-fitting shoe won't just affect your feet) and is durable and you only pay $20: Great!

Treat your feet right, and they'll rarely complain.

(P.S. I swear by Brooks Burn 2's. Sadly, the new 3's just aren't the same.)

What should a man wear with his running shoes at the gym?
Dude... This isn't FLASH DANCE.

Wear what normal men wear to the gym... Proper attire is ok with me!

Wearing flashy shiny black spandix or tights would be a turn off for me! Ditch the flash dance get up and act like a real man and wear gym shorts and shirt.
Reply:no black spandex tights please. A nice pair of basketball shorts or even running shorts should be better. About the shoes and shoes, they're are ok as long as you don't pull your socks all the way up. There are several options of workout socks in the market now. They are lower than the regular and look nicer too.

I have been running for 8 years now and definitely will say "DO NOT GO TOWARDS STYLE OR COMFORT!!!" Though I am biased towards Nike as a brand, I would recommend you to go to a running-specific store, like Fleet Feet in Carrboro, NC. They can help you find the right shoe because people buy shoes that aren't necessarily right for their feet, but more comfortable or fashionable. But after you get the correct shoes or even if you haven't, I would go to any major athletics store and ask the sales associates because they are getting paid to know the products they are selling. But make sure you state the use/reason for buying the shoes. Good luck!!!

Any suggestions on how I can test my running shoes outside without getting them dirty?

I just bought a new pair of running shoes and I want to give them a test run to see if they hurt - my feet are pretty fickle..

Unfortunately - I don't have access to a treadmill :-S

Any suggestions on how I can test my running shoes outside without getting them dirty?
..

I empathize with your question. When I am going from one brand or model of shoes to another, which I did two years ago, I end up testing and wasting a couple of pairs of shoes. Sometimes that is just part of the process.

Here's a few hints to get an early warning signal about the shoes you are testing.

-wear them, walking around, in your house for an hour or so. Though the lasts for running shoes (i.e., the bottoms and soles) are typically narrower than for walking shoes, and are designed for forward motion only, you can still get a pretty good idea about whether the shoes are wide enough and long enough by walking around for an hour on wood floors or carpeting.

-you don't have access to a treadmill, others have mentioned going to a track - that's a good idea as long as it is a rubberized surface with a lighter colorf (e.g., red) and not asphalt or with a darker surface.

Just about anything else will leave stains, or even wear down the shoes you are testing.

Talk to the clerks in the various running shoe stores. Some really good running shops will accept worn shoes back for refunds or exchanges. We found a shop in our area that would not provide a refund, but at least permitted an exchange.

**Something else to consider is to go to a running specialty shop that provides a gait analysis as part of their fitting services. The gait analysis results often give you a good idea in advance of selecting a shoe what types of shoes, or what characteristics of shoes, work for YOUR feet.

Apart from these ideas, it's a matter of trial and error finding a shoe that works for you. Once you do, stick with that shoe, buy extra pairs when they go on sale, unless the shoe manufacturer severely changes the characteristics of the model you like.

More and more superstores/grocery stores [Wal*Mart...depending where you live - Meijers] are starting to sell namebrand clothing and shoe brands. You could try that. Or there's always eBay. I know that they have online stores connected to eBay that sell running shoes wholesale - brand new for really cheap. Those are a few options. :) Good luck!
Reply:If your foot rolls inward at all then I'd suggest a brand called New Balance. New Balance has stores around the USA.
Reply:personally i'm an asic fan
Reply:U should get nike free. Because it's bendable on shoes and lightweight. THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE RUNNING SHOE.

Nike Free is engineered to match the contours and performance of the bare foot, for runners who are interested in strengthening the natural movement of their feet.

The seamless construction creates lightweight comfort and a snug home for your foot. A dynamic heel pocket allows stable, natural mobility in the heel; the anatomical sockliner is vented for breathability.

The sculpted midsole puts your foot in its most natural position. Two shoe inserts are included, so you can choose which feels more comfortable on your bare foot.

Deep cuts in the outsole allow the foot to flex and move the way it would if it were barefoot: The outsole's longitudinal "siping" is placed closer to the lateral side to accommodate foot pressure patterns. Reverse flex grooves in the forefoot allow greater toe flexibility.

How can I convince my mom that I shouldn't wear my running shoes as casual shoes too?

I used to have some Adidas shoes. Nothing special. I ussed them for running and wore them basically everywhere else. I just got a pair of Asics Gel- Equations for running. I don't want to wear those for casual shoes, but my old ones are torn up and smell horrible! How can I convince my mom to get me new casual shoes? What are some good reasons/ excuses?

How can I convince my mom that I shouldn't wear my running shoes as casual shoes too?
Tell her that running shoes should only be worn for running. If you wear them too often they get worn out and can cause injuries. Depending on how often you run, how many miles per week, you should get new shoes. Running 5-6 days a week, you should change your shoes about every 3 months. By wearing them more often that 3 month span will be shorter. Just let her know that getting a cheap pair of casual shoes will prolong the life-span of your running shoes. Running shoes are more expensive anyways, so you don't want to have to buy them constantly.

Basically just tell her you want to prevent injury and save money by getting a cheap pair of causal shoes.

I hope this helps, I know how important a good pair of running shoes can be.
Reply:Last post pretty much summed it up.

Just wanted to add that the injurys span from ankle sprains to knee pain. Even your back can be shifted out of alignment all because your shoes are worn out. I personally have sprained my ankle because i let my shoes wear out to long.
Reply:find some cheaper shoes on sale or something as casual shoes. thatd work best. otherwise yeah you really shoudlnt cuz it will wear them out and youll need new ones sooner.
Reply:let her smell them

then she will relize u cant wear those for casuals lol
Reply:the good reason is that it increases your likelihood of shin splints... and decreases the amount of time you will be able to use them as running shoes with out doing long term damage to your knees! maybe tell her you will wear them as casual shoes after 3/6 months when you should not be running in the anymore, in the mean time suggest you get cheaper casual shoes.
Reply:It was really difficult for me to make my husband understand the same thing.

Wearing your running shoes for casual, everyday use will severely limit their useful life. Asics have a great cushioning system, but wearing them all day compresses the cushion. You really need two good pairs of running shoes to alternate running days, and then a pair of inexpensive casuals for everyday use. Those running shoes need a break...

Does anyone know of a good shop to buy running shoes in London??

I'm training for a 5K and I need some good running shoes. I just am not sure the best place to buy them. I'd prefer a shop where the people actually know a bit about running and could recommend a good shoe for me.

I'm not interested in just a cute pair of trainers, these actually have to serve a purpose above fashion.

Does anyone know of a good shop to buy running shoes in London??
You could try these:

The Londonmarathon shop (Addidas stuff)

The Nike shop (Nike stuff - surprisingly!)

In Bluewater try HeRunsSheRuns (most brands)(I like this one)

Failing that you could by a copy of say, runners world and in the back there is a store listing - there might be some london ones near you in there
Reply:Harrods excellent sports section don't know what the prices are like though. A good pair of asics can cost you around €150 euro in Ireland seen them on ebay for €100 including delivery.

Asic's are the runners, runner (excuse the English) great cushion in them and they last also. I have a pair of Gel Keyano by Asics and they are excellent lightweight also.

Give them a try.

Can someone give me advice on finding a good pair of running shoes?

I've been running since 2004, and I found a pair of running shoes that were perfect - New Balance. I ran a marathon in them last May, but since I got all the use out of them, I've tried buying other New Balance shoes (they dont' seem to make that particular model anymore). I've purchased a few different pairs of New Balance and a pair of Nikes, but they are all too small for me now. I don't understand it. They seemed to fit fine in the store, but after wearing them a few times, my toes are totally cramped in there. I'm 27 years old! Why would my feet be growing?? The 9 1/2 felt awkward and too big when I tried them on in the store. Should I just buy the 9 1/2 and wear thicker socks? It would be great if they made a 9 1/4! I think I might go to an actual running store this weekend and have someone help me, but whatever tips I can get here would be great. Thanks!

Can someone give me advice on finding a good pair of running shoes?
The best thing to do would go to be fitted at a running store. They can look at your foot type and depending on what it is recommend some shoes. One with a high-arch will most likely be in a neutral cushion running shoe (asics-Landreth, Nimbus/ Brooks-radius,glcerin/ New Balance- 1060,801/ Sucony- ride/ Mizuno- wave rider, wave creation) Someone with a mid to low arch will most likely be in a stability shoe. These shoes have more support and help to keep your arch from collapsing. (asics-2120, Kayano / Brooks-Adrenalin)

As for size, each shoe is different. You must feel comfortable and have about a thumbnail of room in the toe box. New Balance and Sucony shoes tend to run wide, while Mizuno and Nike shoes tend to run narrow.

Your running shoes tend to be exactly ONE whole size bigger than your normal dress shoes. Also your feet swell throughout the day so at different times your size will be different. It is best to try on shoes mid-day/afternoon

I work in a running specialty store and could go on for hours about shoes. If you would like anymore help please contact me

Reply:I know this sounds odd, but after trying on a ton of name brands at various stores, I eventually found a pair that felt perfect ... at Walmart. For $13. They look a little generic, but do the trick. No one's looking at 5:15 a.m.

Then again, I'm not a competitive runner. Report It

Reply:Join the Nike club run. You can try on Nike shoes (different models and sizes) and run in them. No purchase required. When you find the ones you like, then buy them. I'm still wearing my old Saucony but probably will get a pair of Nikes this xmas.

go to Nike.com
Reply:As a marathoner, you probably should be going at least a half size larger anyway for swelling.

Your feet do grow, and shoes change year-to-year, and new versions of a particular model. My feet have grown almost a full size in the last 10 years. I too stick with New Balance, but have had good luck in Brooks and Saucony.

As you suggested, DO go into a running shop, and have them check you out. Bring your old shoes. Some stores have some slick imaging equipment, and/or at the very least will be more thorough in selecting shoes appropriate for you. They'll nail down your foot strike, measure both feet, etc.

You may spend a bit more, but it should be worth it. Also worth noting, some strores are pretty good about your satisfaction. My local store will allow you to return nearly any shoe.
Reply:Yes, your feet still grow. I was shocked when my shoes started to not fit in my 30's and had to go up a 1/2 size. Normally running shoes should by a 1/2 size larger than your street shoes since your feet swell when you run and you don't want to cramp your toes. Some people get black and blue toes or blisters because their shoes are too small. The other thing you may need is to to buy narrower shoes. Asics 2120 makes narrower shoe widths. These are the best I found. Most shoes don't have narrower widths, so I'm limited with the shoes I can buy.

So my recommendation is to buy a 1/2 size larger and a narrower width. Make sure you go to a quality running shoe store, they'll fit you properly. Stay away from sporting goods stores, they don't have the properly knowledge to fit you with the correct shoe.
Reply:I wouldn't go with an awkward or too-big pair of running shoes. You might have to just get the 9 and wear thin athletic socks. I prefer that anyway. Bulky thick socks and too-big shoes will really slow you down and make your running feel off-sync and just awkward in general. You may have to switch to a different brand. I really like Asics, and my sister in law who is a runner also swears by Saucony. You might just go to a running store and at least get fitted for some (although you can probably find the same shoe cheaper elsewhere).
Reply:I have had the same problem, different shoe companies size differently. I have a strange foot and have found asic's to be great.

What is the best brand of running shoes for men with flat feet and are moderate to severely overpronate?

I am 6'1" tall and weigh 179 lbs. Also, I would prefer to stick with Nike running shoes, but am open to suggestions.

What is the best brand of running shoes for men with flat feet and are moderate to severely overpronate?
There's lot's of shoes for you to try:

Asics - Gel Evolution 3

New Balance - 1010

Asics - Gel MC Plus

Brooks - Beast 9

Saucony - Progrid Stabil

Mizuno - Wave Renegade 3

Go to a store and see which works best for you. You should be looking for a motion control plus shoe.

Nike doesn't make any motion control "plus" shoes which is what you need because of your weight. If you insist on Nike the Air Cesium and Air Cesium 2 might work.

Is it ok to use basketball shoes as rong distance running shoes?

is it ok to do this? any long term effects or is it basically the same as a pair of running shoes besides the weight?

Is it ok to use basketball shoes as rong distance running shoes?
That's definitely a bad idea and a good way to get injured. Basketball shoes lack the cushioning of running shoes. Conversely you shouldn't play basketball in running shoes. They lack the stability and support of basketball shoes and are likely to cause ankle injuries.
Reply:As long as your shoes have good support, they are fine to run in. However, you will have a lot better times if you run with running shoes, and you will find that your training pays off more.

What are a good pair of running shoes for me to wear?

My feet aren't flat they are arched, I've been doing track lately and im so determined to practice and well whats a good pair of running shoes I should get?

What are a good pair of running shoes for me to wear?
Look into asics. I wear the asics evolution which is a little bit heavier of a shoe, but its the best shoe I've ever worn. Asics has the best support and the most comfort and they make several different types to fit your needs. They hold together longer than say a Nike which breaks down incredibly fast.
Reply:Are they wide? Do you pronate or overpronate? More info is needed to really tell you which shoes are best. If you have a high arch, you might be comfortable in Nikes or Asics, Sauconys or New Balance. I just need more info about your feet to help you better.
Reply:I have been running for 8 years now. Though I am biased towards Nike as a brand, I would recommend you to go to a running-specific store, like Fleet Feet in Carrboro, NC. They can help you find the right shoe because people buy shoes that aren't necssarily right for their feet, but more comfortable or fashionable. But after you get the correct shoes or even if you haven't, I would go to any major athletics store and ask the sales associates. Good luck!!!

Either brand work well- but you need to go to a store to find specifically what shoe by that brand feels comfortable.

The best thing you can do is go down the a Running Lab. In fact there's a place by that name; "Running Lab."

They are GREAT! My spouse has ran a marathon and we are training once again for another one coming up in May. We always go to the running lab. Oh...and the shoes, are sold at a great price too.

And there's no extra charge for their services...it's all part of what they do. So the whole process, from the moment you get in the door to the moment you select your shoes, is free.

I've personally used the Running Lab, along with my spouse and many others, they are FANTASTIC! And they have all kinds of different Brands of shoes. From Nike to New Balance. =)

Hope this helps...

Is there a reason you should not wear running shoes for anything other than running?

Other than just because it will wear them out more quickly? I have had people tell me that you shouldn't wear your running shoes any other time than when you go for a run.

Is there a reason you should not wear running shoes for anything other than running?
lol that's not true. they are called running shoes because they are highly recommended and are actually designed for running, or sports that would require much footwork on hard court. wear them on regular walks and other outdoor activities... they're not illegal to use if it's not for running... and a lot of them have great designs you can easily match with other clothes too ;)
Reply:Next time they tell you that, tell them that they are the only pair of shoes you own and that you have no choice but to wear them. Its either wear the shoes or go around in bare socks. Then ask them if it would make them feel better if you RAN everywhere you went when you have them on.
Reply:Well the cushion in them is designed for running, so it is going to be a little stiffer than a walking shoes would be. But a running shoe is usually lighter and ventilates your foot better.
Reply:lol well they are just designed for running

How do I find quality running shoes?

I need to find quailty running shoes - preferrably ones that won't cost me like $300. Any suggestions??

How do I find quality running shoes?
Go to a shoe store that specializes in running shoes and get their suggestions. Also get the name of a couple of shoes that they suggest, also let them know you do not want to spend $300+ dollars on a pair of shoes.

Take their suggestions to a store that carries the same shoes at a discount and you have solved your problem.

DSW is a suggestion for running shoes, they may not have a huge selection but you won't be shoveling out hundreds either.

Try those sports shops also and go to the discount section or ask if they have any high end running shoes in back that they were not able to sell. You never know they might have what you want and need and sell them to you cheaply because they would not sell in the store.

Hope I helped.

Doe a person's body weight effect the lifespan of their running shoes?

They say that a pair of running shoes should last about 4 to 5 months while running 10 to15 miles a week. Do these figures apply to everyone? I mean, my running partner weighs about 110 lbs and is 5'2" while I weigh about 165 lbs and am 5'8".

How could it possible be true that our shoes are good for the same amount of time? The cushioning in my shoes should wear out faster, right?

Doe a person's body weight effect the lifespan of their running shoes?
You would think that all things would be equal, but I can tell you from experiance that weight will play a small role in running shoe wear. A typical running shoe will last 400 - 600 miles, But I am 6'3" and weight in at 205lbs, typicall running shoes last 10 - 12weeks, or about 400Km which is only 240 miles.

Ascis in my opinion last longer then any other brand, with adidas a close second. Suconey seems to wear very quickly and I have heard from others the same complaint.

Harry
Reply:the cushioning may where out depending on the pressure put on them. You could always by new insoles fro more cushioning if they still look alright on the outside.
Reply:Shoes are also made with the runner's weight in mind. So if you bought the correct shoe your weight will not make a big difference in the lifetime of the shoe.

However, your weight and the surface you are running on are factors in the length of time the shoe will do the job it was designed to do.

Don't rely too much on time or mileage, just check the shoes from time to time to make sure they are still good.

The time or distance on a shoe is like the miles on tires, they are just numbers and you don't know for sure how long they will last.

What are the best NIKE running shoes for in the winter?

Im going to be running in the winter my coach and im wondering what shoes would be best for distance, stability, and all that other good stuff. Thank you =)

What are the best NIKE running shoes for in the winter?
You want good shoes that help keep your feet dry. I don't think it matters what time of year it it. They should have enough cushioning to absord the shock to keep from injuring your body. The best advice would be to try on different shoes from a running shoe store. Don't go to the mall, or payless. Get fitted for running shoes if your serious about running. They will look at your arch, how much you weigh, how you walk. Then they will be able to get you into the right shoe for you.

I'm not sure where you live so I can't recommend a good store for you. If you live in California, here's a good store: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/

Nike definitely chooses style over substance. Shox are notorious for causing ankle problems due to the elevated heel.

I would suggest going to a specialty running store and being fitted by someone there based on alignment, gait etc.

I am an avid distance runner who competes at a pretty high level and I can't remember seeing a pair of Nikes on someone who knows better.
Reply:Hmmm. Tough one i'd have to say loafers.

Asics Gel-Kinsei Women's Running Shoes?

Okay: can anyone find a better price than $149.00 for these sneakers? I have looked for hours! Please help!!!!!!!!

Asics Gel-Kinsei Women's Running Shoes?
The only place where you will find them is eBay (see link below), where you can find them brand new but in older models. I cannot find them anywhere else for cheaper than $149. At that price, I would take them unless you're willing to go with the older models at eBay.
Reply:Have you tried the Goodwill Store or Salvation Army?

Seriously, 4 or 5 years ago I paid $129 for the men's version so I don't expect the price to be any cheaper, but that's a top-of-the-line shoe. I loved it. The price is the price, as they say.

Good Luck

Which New Balance shoes are good for a female runner with low back pain, cross trainers or running shoes?

I do aerobics, weight train, and run on a treadmill, and my lower back hurts all the time. Running shoes seem to make it worse. Anyone have experience with New Balance Cross Trainers?

Which New Balance shoes are good for a female runner with low back pain, cross trainers or running shoes?
Since different styles of running demand different styles of shoes...

The best thing you can do is go down a Running Lab. In fact there's a place by that name; "Running Lab."

They are GREAT! My spouse has ran a marathon and we are training once again for another one coming up in May. We always go to the running lab. Oh...and the shoes, are sold at a great price too.

I've personally used the Running Lab, along with my spouse and many others, they are FANTASTIC! And they have all kinds of different Brands of shoes. From Nike to New Balance. =)

Hope this helps...oh, the shoes that I picked out ended up being about $80 or so.

Good luck. =)

Does it matter what color running shoes you wear to WLC (PLDC)?

I just bought a pair of Nike running shoes, but they have red in them? Is that going to be a problem?

Does it matter what color running shoes you wear to WLC (PLDC)?
It should not be a problem at all. When I went to PLDC at back in 2005 my packing list said just 1 pair of running shoes. I doubt they have got that specific yet. Just make sure you have everything on your packing list when you get there, it is really hard to trust someone in your unit to come through with everything you need. A finally bought a star card before I went.

Reply:Many New Balance shoes are supposedly vegan. I think there is a website about this, and I believe you can email the company to find out which ones use the man made materials. You could look around Road Runner Sports. Or go to the All Vegan store (I guess they carry Spira).

How can I detect if my running shoes are gone?

I am running with some NB 857 shoes, I id not count the amount of miles I run on it, is there a way I can find out if I need to change them like checking the cushioning, the in sole etc?

How can I detect if my running shoes are gone?
I think what you mean is, when is it time to replace your running shoe?

If thats the case check the tread, if its worn down to an unrecognizable point, def time to get a new pair of shoes.

As far as what to buy, this is an area you dont want to skimp out on. Your feet are the only part of your body that make contact with the ground when your running. So all the weight of your body is going on that small surface area. Shockwaves get sent up your leg and can be very painfull if you dont have proper support. Get a shoe that cradles the ankle, has a good tread, and possibly reduces the amount of shock that gets sent into your body.
Reply:look at your feet. no shoes? their gone.
Reply:Im guessing if you cant find your shoes for about a week or so then they are deffinately gone!
Reply:If your shoes are pretty flexible then that means it may be time to get a new pair. Ex: If you take your shoe in your two hands and its very easy to bend the toe to the heel= time to go. Also if you have been running with these shoes 5 to 6 days a week for the past 3 and half months, more than 5 miles each day, time to go. If the tread on the bottom of the shoe is worn and smooth, time to go.
Reply:I disagree with everyone else.

Any shoe, especially running shoes, is designed to last about 300-500 miles.

Running shoes are even more important. Since running shoes are designed to help shock absorb during the running, it is even more crucial for you to know your milage. A pair of shoe with bad shock absorption will increase your risk of injury such as plantar fasciitis, heel spur, shin splint, ITB injury, knee injury, etc. Even a properly fitted and relatively new shoe can cause those, but an old pair really put the risk high.

I usually change shoes every 400 miles and make an afford to estimate or track the number of miles. In general, I train about 20 miles a week, so I change my shoe every 4-5 months. That is a good estimate. When I look at those shoes that are replaced, everything look fine. I can't tell from the tread, the sole, the cushion, or anything - and that is the way it should be. If I were to change shoes when the cushion or soles are breaking down, I might already be injured.

If you want to run, change shoes regularly. Make an afford to track the milage and get rid of any pair more than 500 miles. Believe me, having run so many marathons and still having relatively healthy feet and legs (but also had my share of injuries, a few of them stemed from bad shoes), I know. It is not worth the money that you are trying to save.
Reply:Look at the shoes. Set them on a table and look at them from behind. How do they set on the table. Is there wear so that they are not setting correctly? How do they feel to your hands? You can tell if they have lost their cushion. Miles are just a guide they will not tell you when the shoe is good or bad. You can hold the shoe and fold its toe toward the heel, how much does it flex? Feel of a new pair and compare them.
Reply:Look at the sides of the soles in the area of the heel just behind the arch or medial post. If you see wrinkles in the rubber the cushioning is toast.

Manufacturers generally recommend replacing your shoes at 400-500 miles, but that could be less depending on your weight and what kind of surfaces you run on.
Reply:if tread is unrecognizable or flat then you need new shoes. most importantly if the sole of the shoe begins to wrinkle on the sides or you feel a lot of pounding in the heel from the pavement then its time to replace shoes.
Reply:Along with everything else the other contributors said...

How do they feel when you run? Do your feet feel like there striking the pavement due to lack of support/cushioning? Go to a running store for the best advice, most workers at exclusively running stores are knowledgeable in the sport. Especially in the shoe department, that's their job!

Any body know of any good running shoes for a male thats flatfooted?

I have trouble picking out good shoes cuz i am flatfooted, i plan on training for cross country over the summer and i need a good pair of running shoes at a reasonable price.

Any body know of any good running shoes for a male thats flatfooted?
Well there are alot of choices. I'd try the Mizuno Wave Inspire $90. I know it may seem alittle high in price. But we runners have a rule, if the shoe is less than $60, it's to cheap and won't help you, if it's above $110, they overcharge, your basically paying for their ads. Have fun, I love cross country!

Can i do jogging with street soccer shoes if i do not have "Running" shoes ?

Can i go jogging with a pair of street soccer shoes instead of a pair of "Running" Shoes ( Those meant specifically for running )

Is it safe ? Will it hurt me? Is it bad for my feet ?

Can i do jogging with street soccer shoes if i do not have "Running" shoes ?
for a very short distance you should be fine. otherwise get actual running shoes. the soccer dont have the cushioning and support your feet need for the hard pounding. you can do damage to your arches if you dont have support.
Reply:You can but in the long run it will end up hurting you. Ankle to Knee to hip to back problems may occur. 65% of people overpronate meaning they roll towards the inside. This can lead to some problems if you don't have a shoe to neutralizes that. I suggest getting to stability or cushioning running shoe for about $70 or more. Kind of pricey but worth it.
Reply:If they don't have cleats on them they're fine. They should be comfortable too.
Reply:if they dont have cleats it doesnt matter...for a short run....

but i suggest u get real running shoes if ur gunna do long runs
Reply:why do you have soccer shoes
Reply:you will be fine.

Go to a company called the sweatshop

they are a specialist running store and will do a gait analysis and make sure you end up in a style that works for you

They may not stock size 1 but should be able to order them
Reply:might i ask why you don't like nike... for those who have smaller feet, nike seems to be the best company!

What is the best kind of running shoes that are made to just run?

If you know of any shoes that are dedicated to just running, please answer! free points :]

What is the best kind of running shoes that are made to just run?
Asics Gel Kayano is the best running shoe I've ever had! Way better than my Shox and Adidas!
Reply:According to a recent (Nov. '06) Runner's World magazine survey the top selling running shoes are: Asics, Brooks, Nike, MIzuno and Saucony. The best shoe for you depends upon the type of runner you are (sprint or long distance), foot type, weight etc.. Go to a specialty running store (not Fleet Feet, Sports Authority or Dick's) in your area and get some truly experienced running shoe advice on what specific shoes are better for you individually.
Reply:usally anytype of nikes are good but make sure they give u enough support.
Reply:right now ADIDAS shoes are great shoes and not that pricey...go girl..
Reply:If I was you, I would find a Fleet Feet in the yellow pages and go there. Fleet Feet is a store where shoes specifically for walking and running are sold. When you go there, they have you run on a treadmill (it is recorded on a video camera) to find out what type of shoe would best fit your foot and the activity you will be doing. I went there for cross country shoes a few years ago and it was a very enjoyable experience.

Hope I helped!
Reply:saucony is pretty much dedicated to running only.
Reply:adidas
Reply:There is no such thing as the best shoes for running. There are only the best shoes for your feet which may not be the same as the best shoes for my feet. Really, this is like asking what's the best flavor of ice cream. There are many good shoes out there. They are made by Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, Saucony, New Balance, Addidas and others. Go to a good running specialty store. They will have experienced people who can help you out. Try on some different shoes and pick out something that works for you.
Reply:asics----best shoe just for running.
Reply:That Depends, Running from the cops, Converse All-Stars. Just running like Track or exersise probably Puma, Adias, or Nike

I am looking for recommendations for running shoes?

I am running in a mini-marathon in April. This will be my second time doing it. I want to find some good, sleek shoes that will help my performance. I have a pretty neutral arch. I feel like I need something with good ankle support tho. I like the Puma Complete Prevail and the Brooks Burn3 just to give you some ideas of what type of shoe I have been looking at. Thanks:)

I am looking for recommendations for running shoes?
i love k-swiss, Puma, and Fila........
Reply:You need to visit a good shoe store and have them fit you with good running shoes. They will be able to show you what type of running shoe is made for the type of running you will be doing and they will be able to properly fit you with the right shoe.
Reply:if u like the Puma Complete Privail and the Brooks Burn 3 then get them...why are u even asking this question if u noe wat shoe u like.
Reply:Asics are the best.
Reply:Nike Shox
Reply:Nike Air Max Series are GREAT!!
Reply:I have found great results with New Balance. I would go to a New Balance store and get an expert fit. Their prices are about the same as big box retail stores. Take an older pair of athletic shoes to show your wear pattern.
Reply:Vick Blacksburg NIke Air, perfect.
