No, you have to use specific shoes, only Nike +. That is because in the sole of one of the shoes, there is a spot that is specifically for the sensor. I happened to be on Eastbay.com earlier today, and saw they had some good prices for Nike + shoes, incase you don't have a pair yet.
I do recommend using the kit though, it is very motivational. I love it.
