What are some of the best running shoes?

I started running recently and someone told me that the New Balance that I wear (I love the brand) are actually cross trainers... and that I should get running shoes. Is there really that much of a difference? What are the good ones? Thanks so much!!

The brand New Balance isn't necessarily cross trainers; it's probably the particular style of shoe that you choose. It's not that big of deal, especially if you just started. I personally love New Balance. What you need to be concerned about when buying shoes is that it's a running shoe, that it has the proper cushioning, and that it's comfortable for you.

Go to a running store and ask them to help you pick out the correct shoe. Ask them to do a step test to see if you pronate or supinate (which way your foot rolls when you run). They'll help you get the right shoe for the way you run.

What you need to be concerned about is cushioning, fit, size, and weight. If you plan on training and racing in your shoes, you should have a mid-weight shoe. If they're just for training, get what you like, maybe with a bit extra cushioning. As far as racing, you might want to get race-specific shoes (spikes or flats) that you only wear when you race or do speed workouts. This is important as you get better and more serious about running; it's not a necessity.

The last thing I'll tell you is to remember to get new shoes each season/at least twice a year if you're a recreational runner. Shoes lose their bounce and support after so many miles, so be sure that you're running with a good pair at all times.

Good luck and enjoy running!

Reply:get new balance runner, like 574s,580s,etc.. those are the best for running
Reply:go down to a running store..there you can get your foot checked out and see what shoe is best for you :P
Reply:It all depends on your foot shape, arch size etc. New balance however are generally made with a low arch but are not all cross training shoes. Asics are a great brand with many varietys to fit each individual foot but are generally made for a high arch foot. Mizuno which is the shoes I use are excellent in support all around and made for the neutral foot which is not alot of arch but not completely flat. All three have good support and overall good mechanics for you. You also have to ask yourself what surfaces are you going to be running on, do you want heavier supportive shoes, light weight with some breath-ability. To really find out what kind of shoe you might need, wet one of your feet and then step on a dry piece of concrete to leave a marking. Take a picture and take it to your shoe store. That will no doubt help them if they are trained and qualified in there field to help choose a good shoe for you. In the end its just how comfortable it is with you.
