How long should I wear new running shoes before they're broken in enough to run a 5k?

I am running my first 5k in a few weeks and have been training in old running shoes. I want some new ones before the race, but am wondering how long I have to wear them before they%26#039;re broken in enough. I know it probably depends on the shoe, but am wondering if there is a general rule of thumb.

How long should I wear new running shoes before they%26#039;re broken in enough to run a 5k?
I remember the old days when running shoes needed 10 or 20 miles to loosen up. But nowadays, if the shoe fits, I never get blisters anymore.

Also a 5k is pretty short, you%26#039;d have a hard time getting blisters anyway unless the shoes were a bad fit.

So maybe one or two short runs should be enough.
Reply:It depends how much you use them during the set time.

You might not even need to break them in. If they feel comfortable, and you don%26#039;t have any rub marks, you should be fine.
Reply:I ran in my new shoes the day before a 1/2 marathon tomake sure they didnt give me blisters, so it depends on how they feel.

I always prefer new shoes over old reliable shoes, they are more forgiving on your joints and mentally give you an extra boost. Well they do for me anyway.
Reply:I usually go for one or two runs before hand to make sure the shoes don%26#039;t give me blisters and if I even feel that good running in them
Reply:if they are a good fit, they should be fine. I would take them out for a few runs just to make sure there are no problems going to crop up in them.

I usually transition a shoe in over 2 weeks, while wearing my old ones and then alternating the old ones for the bigger runs and then the little runs for the new ones. Seems to work for me. Also gives me a few more Km on the old ones before giving them up.
